Day 6 of the WSOP Main Event sees field shrink to 78 players

With life-changing amounts of money at stake it’s a bit surprising how fast and furious the action has been at the WSOP Mani Event. A few players have started to separate themselves from the rest of the field, most notably the top Poker Pros in 1st and 2nd place at the end of Day 6: Theo Jorgensen and Mike “The Grinder” Mizrachi.

One player who was unable to make it through Day 6 was two-time Main Event Champion Johnny Chan, who after being amongst the leaders throughout the poker tournament, hit the rail early on Day 6. Poker fans were thus denied a chance to see “The Orient Express” gun for his record tying 3rd Main Event title and 11th overall WSOP bracelet.

However the pair are still far from being on Easy Street; nestled amongst the 76 players chasing Jorgensen and Mizrachi are some highly skilled poker players: The closest adversary being Alexander Kostritisyn who is sitting in 8th place, not far behind the leaders.

Further down the leader-board you’ll find the likes of:

  • 39th place: Eric Baldwin with 2.135 million chips
  • 40th place: Johnny Lodden with 2.105 million chips
  • 49th place: Adam “Roothlus” Levy with 1.685 million chips
  • 51st place: David Baker with 1.635 million chips
  • 54th place: Tony Dunst with 1.55 million chips
  • 55th place: David Benyamine with 1.54 million chips
  • 63rd place: Hasan Habib with 1.165 million chips
  • 70th place: Jason Senti with 970k chips
  • 75th place: Jean-Robert Bellande with 700k chips

As the blinds continue to increase; exhaustion sets in; and the pressure of playing for nearly $9 million in prize-money becomes a reality who really knows how the 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event Championship will play out, so it’s still anyone’s tournament, and as we’ve seen in many recent WSOP tournaments; don’t bet against the underdog!

A couple of players to keep an eye on are Adam Levy and David baker, who have been managing to hold on and survive, so maybe they are due for a good run of cards today! Another player -who I failed to mention above-is 2-time bracelet winner Scott Clements. Clements is a seasoned tournament pro with a lot of experience and a lot of results.

The players will be back at the Rio today for Day 7 of the tournament where they will play down to 27 -3 full tables-before calling it a night, and returning for the final day on Saturday, where they will play down to 9 -the Final Table. At this point the WSOP will go on a prolonged break and the Final Table members will reconvene in November to crown a champion.
