Guide to Pot Limit Omaha poker (part 5 of 5): Final thoughts

Throughout this series I have tried to keep the advice simple, but still applicable for you to apply to a standard PLO game. However, I have only brushed the surface of this very complex form of poker. I tried to emphasize the differences between PLO and Hold’ Em, and give you a glimpse of how different PLO plays.

In this installment I’ll steer you in the right direction to complete your understanding of PLO. The following list is the best resources for PLO available:

Free online information - The best place for PLO strategy is at cardplayer.com. Rolf Slotboom is one of the better PLO minds in the game today, and has a clear, crisp, way of turning his thoughts into written words; which is very difficult in a game full of abstract ideas and contradicting theories.

Slotboom also has archived articles at pokerpages.com, and cardplayer has numerous writers who have discussed PLO in some way, shape, or form.

PLO books - Again I’ll tout Rolf Slotboom, and his book Secrets of Professional Pot Limit Omaha. Many books have appeared on the market in recent years, trying to capitalize on PLO’s surge in popularity; but I still find Slotboom’s book the most detailed and innovative of the bunch. Instead of trying to cram every aspect of PLO into a couple hundred pages, Slotboom put together a very specific strategy for players to implement.

PLO training - There has been a surge in Online Poker training sites recently, where top level pro’s create videos for players to watch and learn from. That said, most of the training is geared toward No Limit Texas Hold’ Em players, and few sites are willing to devote the time and money into creating a top flight PLO training area.

There is one exception: StoxPoker.com. StoxPoker is one of the original poker training sites and employs one of the best in the business in PLO, Robert Williamson III. Williamson offers some great insight into the game, and is very good at explaining his thoughts during the video.

One thing is for certain when dealing with PLO instruction; the game is still in its infancy and there are more winning styles of play for PLO than just about any form of poker. I have seen players win by playing super-tight and aggressive; I’ve seen loose passive winners; and I’ve seen loose aggressive winners.

The best way to approach the game is to absorb as much information, from as many sources as you can, and tailor that information to fit into your style of play, by maximizing your strengths, and minimizing your weaknesses.
