WSOP Day 34 recap part 1: Three bracelets awarded yesterday

After taking a day off from my recap duties yesterday to spout my thoughts and opinions on the 2010 World Series of Poker I realized why I have been doing daily recaps: The action adds up quick! So, today there will be two recaps, the first one for the three events that concluded yesterday, and the second for the events in progress.

Event #47: $1,000 No Limit Holdem

For some people the third time is a charm, apparently Shawn Busse’s charming number is a bit bigger; 16 to be exact. You see, Busse came into this tournament 0-for-15 at the 2010 WSOP: That’s right 15 tournaments entered, and zero cashes!

But all that changed yesterday when Busse not only cashed in the $1k NLHE tournament but won the whole thing, giving the 21 year-old professional poker player his first WSOP bracelet, his biggest payday to date, and not to mention completely changing his 2010 WSOP experience from one of heartache and bad cards to elation and good timing!

Event #49: $1,500 No limit Holdem

While the 21 year0old poker pro Busse was wrapping up the $1k tournament win, across the Rio another youngster was picking up his 1st WSOP win in the $1,500 NLHE tournament, only this early-20’s poker player only considers himself a semi-pro, Michael Linn. Linn is a 23 year-old English Major at Cal-Poly who now has enough money in the bank for a few more years of school if he so desires, over $600k to be precise.

Event #49 was another smaller buy-in No Limit Holdem tournament that was dominated by younger players, and these tournaments have been really the only ones at the 2010 WSOP that haven’t had a number of top poker players making deep runs in them -of course this has everything to do with field size, and less deep-stack play.

Event #50: $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha

Usually when you combine a $5k buy-in with a non-Holdem variant of poker you see the big name pros all over the leader-board, but in the $5,000 PLO tournament this was not the case, with the top 5 finishers all having very little notoriety in the poker world and all without a major win. The pros did make their presence felt with Julian Gardner, Robert Mizrachi and Eric Liu all at the final table, but none of them could manage better than a 6th place finish.

The winner of the tournament, and the $508,000 first-place prize-money was poker pro Chance Kornuth. The young poker pro from Colorado actually found himself heads-up with another Colorado poker player Kevin Boudreau at the end of the tournament.
