As the 2010 World Series of Poker inches closer to the Main Event, players are starting to realize that another year of what could be called the “Craziest Month in Sports” is coming to a close. Only one tournament other than the Main Event has yet to begin, and that kicks off today.
Event #51: $3,000 Triple Chance No Limit Holdem
The one event that finished up yesterday was the Triple Chance NLHE tournament which saw Ryan Welch picked up his first WSOP win, along with a nice $560k payday. Welch outlasted a very game field of 965 entrants, and was able to beat a tough final table that included Poker Pros Will Failla, Tommy Vedes, and Tad Jurgens, all of whom were seeking to add their first WSOP bracelet to their resumes.
Event #52: $25,000 6-Handed No Limit Holdem
The second big buy-in tournament saw the Internet pros jump out in front on Day 1, but Day 2 saw the Internet poker superstars, as well as the ‘Live’ high-stakes cash game players end up at the top of the leader-board. Amongst the 18 players remaining the field are Daniel Negreanu, Carlos Mortensen, Abe Mosseri, Justin Bonomo, Frank Kassela, Eugene Katchalov, Isaac Haxton, Dan “djk123″ Kelly, Jason Somerville, Shawn Buchanan, along with one female player Heater Sue Mercer.
Event #53: $1,500 Limit Holdem Shootout
The final table is set for the Limit Holdem Shootout and there will be a few big name poker players filling three of the eight seats at the table. Two-time WPT champion and former Player of the Year on the World Poker Tour Jonathan Little; Cardrunners/StoxPoker instructor, and Limit Holdem specialist, Michael “Schneids” Schneider; and the obligatory Canadian presence for the tournament is poker pro Terrence Chan.
Event #54: $1,000 No Limit Holdem
The Final $1k No Limit Holdem tournament of the 2010 WSOP was one of the best turnouts, with a total of 3,861 players taking to the poker tables at the Rio over the two starting days. With 780 players remaining it’s still anyone’s tournament, but it should be noted that James Dempsey is the current chip-leader. The British poker pro Dempsey already has a 1st and 2nd place finish in the 2010 WSOP, so don’t be surprised if he finishes the day still near the top of the chip-counts.
Event #55: $10,000 Pot Limit Omaha World Championship
346 players decided to enter the PLO Championship, creating a massive prize-pool of $3.25 million. With 153 players remaining there are some nice story-lines developing; most notably Tom “durrrr” Dwan sitting in 3rd place at the moment -I believe everyone is now familiar with the side-bets Dwan has on himself winning a WSOP bracelet this year! Not far behind durrrr are a couple of very formidable female poker pro: Vanessa Selbst, who recently signed with PokerStars, and Annette Obrestad whom the poker world is still awaiting a breakout performance from at the 2010 WSOP.
